Week 4, Post 1

I have really tried to focus my search on using digital photography in a social studies classroom and what it can do to enhance a student's reading. However, I have had very limited success in finding any research, articles, etc that focus solely on digital photography in social studies. I have decided to change my focus. I still want to look into digital photography and education and if it really enhances student performance. I am just going to focus on general education though.
Having said all of this, here is my most recent discovery. "Using a Digital Camera in the Classroom" from the University of Maryland breaks down using the digital camera to enhance any project. It covers every subject, including social studies, and gives great ideas on projects that would look even better if digital pictures were included. I really liked that a list of additional sites was included. It led to many great ideas for my classroom.

  1. The article you chose was great because it covered ideas K - 12 and also by subject. I, too, have had a difficult time with finding research articles, but hopefully it will be getting easier.

  2. There are a lot of great ideas on this page. My wife teaches first grade and keeps a digital camera in the class to record many of the activities they complete. She puts a lot of the images on a class website that only students and parents have access to. I think she would be interested in some of these other ideas you have been sharing with us.

  3. Hi Jen;

    Have you looked at PhotoStory 3? I don't think you've mentioned in your posts. Here's the URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/PhotoStory/default.mspx

    Maybe there might be some ideas for lesson plans or links to educational articles.

    There were some good ideas for projects on the link you posted. The project that stood out to me was the yearbook project especially for students who are interested in journalism.

    I am sure you are having difficulty finding research articles concerning digital photography and social studies. There probably aren't that many studies on using digital photography in the K-12 classroom.
